THE HISTORY OF TANG SOO DO

(Grand Master Hwang Kee- founder of Tang Soo Do)

An important part of any students training in the martial arts is being knowledgeable in its history. Questions such as; Where did your current art form (as it exists to today) come from? Who created the path on which you travel in your studies to today? Where did it all begin & when? The art we practice today is very special and very unique in today's world. It has a distinct, traceable history. So many Do Jang's open all over the world, every day on every street corner, but how many can trace their origins back 10 years? 20 years? How about a few hundred years? Ours can. Here we will try to offer you a brief glimpse at that progression towards the art which you are considering studying today.

    The Beginning

The martial art "Tang Soo Do" is relatively modern, although the basis for it's conception (Soo Bahk) dates back many centuries. It's founder, Master Hwang Kee, a martial arts prodigy in his time, created Tang Soo by combining the arts he'd studied for many years; Soo Bahk, Tae Kyun (no relation to Tae Kwon Do) & the Chinese method of Tang between 1936-1945. The art of "Soo Bahk" itself dates back many centuries as is noted in the infamous Korean text "The Muye Dobo Tongji". It is in this revered ancient martial arts manual that an explanation is given as to the origins of the first ever mention of the art of "Soo Bahk". It, "Soo Bahk", orginated during the Jon Han Dynasty in China. According to the Muye Dobo Tongji, Mung Gong of the Jin Dynasty dreamed of a fight he'd had with King Song from the Tcho Dynasty, referring to his method of fighting as "Kwon Bahk". This ancient form of Soo Bahk consisted solely of hand and foot techniques handed down throughout the Ko Ku Ryo Dynasty & right up to today. During his extensive training, in 1957 Master Hwang Kee "re-discovered" this ancient name "Soo Bahk" & founded his very first "Moo Duk Kwan Federation" school under this name. It was Master Hwang Kees interpretation of this ancient art form which began the re-birth of Soo Bahk & Tang Soo Do as a traditional Korean art form.
